Sagnac interferometer (iFOG) Videos

A collection of videos on the construction of various fiber optic Sagnac interferometers.

1. Sagnac interferometer fiber optic Gyroscope (FOG) construction and testing.

Demonstration of a simple, low cost Sagnac interferometer, also known as a Fiber Optic Gyroscope ( FOG ). More info here.

2. Sagnac interferometer / fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) with improved resolution

As a follow up to our first video, the Sagnac interferometer described herein can detect rotation as low as 1 revolution every 7 hours. Uses simple construction methods to keep the cost low.

3. Detecting earth's diurnal rotation using a large area Sagnac interferometer

This video describes the construction and testing of a Sagnac interferometer / Fiber Optic Gyroscope (FOG) sensitive enough to detect earth's rotation through space by detecting the speed of light difference in the clockwise and counter-clockwise directions from the perspective of the rotating observer. An article accompanying this video is available here.

4. iFOG Sagnac fiber optic interferometer with wireless data collection

In the fourth installment of our Sagnac series, we show the implementation of a wireless Bluetooth data logging system to collect the interferometer output data at various rotation rates and import it into an Excel spreadsheet.

Fiber Optic Michelson interferometer videos

Building a fiber optic Michelson interferometer is tricky - here's how we did it.

5. A Fiber Optic Michelson Interferometer - first attempt

This video describes the construction of an all fiber optic Michelson interferometer using Faraday rotator mirrors to overcome the birefringence issues encountered with single mode fiber. Part 1 of 2.  An article further describing this work is available here.

6. Fiber Optic Michelson Interferometer Part 2: The Kennedy Thorndike Experiment

In this second video we improve the fiber optic Michelson interferometer by making it more compact and adding a Bluetooth data logging system, as well as mounting it on a rotating platform. This allows us to attempt a Kennedy Thorndike type experiment, as well as a Shamir and Fox type experiment. The predicted outcome based on Lorentz ether theory is discussed by way of our on line simulators. An article accompanying this video is available here.

Optical Bench Construction

7. Low cost optical bench from scratch

Low cost optical bench construction using a hand made aluminum breadboard and optical mounts. Demonstrated with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer.

Vacuum Tube Pump Down and Sealing

8. Pumping Down and Sealing a High Vacuum Tube

We describe the construction of a vacuum system including a diffusion pump for evacuating and sealing tubes to high vacuum (up to 1 E-6 Torr ). We demonstrate the process on an example vacuum tube, including out-gassing with heat.

Optical Standing Wave Sensor Construction

9. A simple Standing Wave Interferometer

This video shows the construction of a simple standing wave interferometer using a custom transparent CdS thin film sensor cast on glass. Also uses piezo actuators to generate a repetitive AC signal as the counter-propagating waves move through the sensor.

Two Laser Optical Interference

10. Interference between two independent laser beams

Laser beam interference demonstrated between two independent, frequency-stabilized HeNe lasers. Demonstrates that independent photons do in fact interfere, despite the famous statement of Dirac to the contrary. More info here.

Magnetic Levitation

11.
Magnetic Levitation Motor with Eddy Current Drive Part 1.

A motor with a magnetically levitated rotor and driven by eddy currents from a stator. Description and low speed run. More info here

12. Magnetic Levitation Motor with Eddy Current Drive Part 2

A motor with a magnetically levitated rotor and driven by eddy currents from a stator. High speed run.

Homopolar Motor

16. Simple high speed homopolar motor

A simple high speed homopolar motor using a screw, neodymium magnet, brush, mounting and power supply.

Water Arc Launcher

17. Water arc explosion lifting a 17 gram weight

A water arc launcher fires a 2 mL water slug after discharging 13 kilovolts through it. Lifts a 17 gram object. More info under "Our experiments and Videos."

Permanent Magnet Motor Adams / Bedini Style

18. 3D printed permanent magnet motor/generator using magnet reed switch actuation.

Shows our design for a universal motor platform kit with both the rotor and stator having 20 positions to place magnets and stator pieces such as coils and reed switches. The current version is configured in the Adams / Bedini style to demonstrate some of the reported effects with these motors.
